Here's more. When it's time to head out for a lunchtime meal, people in Melbourne are spoilt with options. If you care for a great value hearty Indian meal, then a short walk from Flinders Street station, and opposite the town hall on Swanston Street, is the popular lunchtime venue, Crossways restaurant. The open and relaxed environment, provides the ideal setting to enjoy the very affordable and nutritious vegetarian meals. While many locals are lead to Crossways by word of mouth, for United Kingdom visitor, Cambell Budge, the Crossways secret was revealed in his 'Lonely Planet' travel guide to Australia. [Cambell Budge, English Tourist]: "It did state that this was a great 'cheap eat' place, I completely concur with that, delicious...healthy good food for cheap, it's dynamite, brilliant." Students comprise 80% of the restaurant's regular patrons, they echo the words now often heard about eating out, and praise the Crossways offerings. [Teagan Scarlett, Student]: "Things are expensive, prices are going up...it's the first time I've been here, really good value for money, the food's brilliant." [Tamsien West, Student]: "It's very important to have something that's very inexpensive, so that people who can't afford to spend a lot of money on their meals, can have something that really is nutritious, lots of healthy vegetables and rice, and things like that." [Elisa Carbone, Student]: "It's a fantastic little discovery right here in the city. It is hard finding cheap meals in the city sometimes if you're a student, especially something that's fairly healthy and filling like this is, it was great, it was fantastic...really good, I'm really looking forward to starting desert." The typical Crossways desert is Halva, a semolina based sweet treat, it seems to have given Tamsien a bit of a boost. [Tamsien West, Student]: It's delicious, I'm not sure what it's made out of, but they have different type of fruit in it each day, so today it was pineapple, and it's...I've never tasted anything like it before, but it's beautiful." The fixed low prices of $5 australian dollars for students, and $6.50 for non students, for as many servings as you like, are possible because of the set meals and bulk preparation, and also due to the fact that the restaurant is run by a Hari Krishna volunteer organization. listening to kitchen hand Kanapathy Ramasamy, their sense of selflessness shines through. [Kanapathy Ramasamy, Kitchen Hand]:" Many people are obviously down on their luck, and we offer them, they can help out for half an hour as a volunteer, and they get a free meal. Also even if they can't help out so much due to a lack of energy and everything like that, we just give them a free meal anyway."If you're not in Melbourne, don't fret, there may just be a Crossway's type restaurant near you, manager Daniel Feillafe explains. [Daniel Feillafe, Crossways Restaurant Manager]:" We have it throughout Australia, every city, throughout the world, the whole world, Asia, Europe, America, Africa, it's everywhere....New Zealend, it's worldwide." And Daniel, just so you know, while you were out on the street, your kitchen staff were playing up. But with the washing load from an average of 450 meals per day, who'd blame them!.
