Sometimes I catch myself thinking late into the night about how I will remember the big moments in my life that have yet to arrive. I picture myself living the moments, and I force myself to realize how normal it all is, how the events have been experienced many times before by many people and will be experienced many times after. Like I’m preparing: teaching myself lessons before I learn them. So that I don’t get too surprised and freak out. Sometimes this practice is for the better, or for the worse. Luckily I don’t do it all the time. The footage was shot over the course of two weeks in July of 2008. I chose Super 8mm because of its unique perspective as a (almost strictly) home movie medium. Its instinctive spatial rhythm and distinctive texture are very specific to a departed tradition of memory making and memory sharing, and the capturing and exhibiting processes of Super 8mm were once common, homespun methods of learning and of contextualizing self and society. In comparison, recent home movie cameras often have different, more public exhibitions, and with the progression of design and technology, capturing techniques have become more myriad. I wanted to make conversation with these conventions and talk about growing up and finding understanding within a culture. Here, the Super 8mm image has been converted to digital video. Compression artifacts noisily mingle amongst film grain and establish a relationship between the fidelity of the frame and the fragility of the past.
